Working Principle
The chemical cell method employs the principle of redox cells for oxygen analysis. The cell mainly consists of a cathode, an anode, and electrolyte, all sealed inside an inert housing.
When oxygen in the sample gas enters the cell, oxygen molecules gain electrons at the cathode. The anode is made of metallic lead, which loses electrons and gets oxidized. Electrons generated by the cell are conducted through a circuit, then compensated, corrected, and amplified to determine the oxygen content in the sample gas.

Alkaline Sensor
Cathode:
O₂ + 2H₂O + 4e⁻ → 4OH⁻
Anode:
2Pb + 4OH⁻ → 2PbO + 2H₂O + 4e⁻
Acidic Sensor
Cathode:
O₂ + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻ → 2H₂O
Anode:
Pb → Pb²⁺ + 2e⁻
